Perfectionism
For a short period of time in class Leeper talked about perfectionism, and how some artists are so worried about getting the image on their head to perfectly match what they have on the paper, or whatever medium you like to use. He pointed out that this endeavor can really make your artwork go flat. Your artwork should take you places that make you say, "Wow, I didn't see this one coming." Oftentimes what you have in your head is pale in comparison to what you could do with you artwork. This very well might be the problem and fear that many aspiring artists have with sharing their art with the world. The strive for perfectionism could be a paralyzing fear that prevents you from having that conversation with art. When an artist is too worried about what other people will think, and too preoccupied with perfection, they are forgetting that art is really a conversation with the world. You cannot very well have a conversation with anybody, let alone the world, if you are too busy worrying about yourself. I know this is something I struggle with, so I thought this discussion was a really important one to have. So have some confidence, everyone!
