The Gospel, a Scandal

Hi guys,

So, I just finished reading "One Baaad Messiah", and, instead of going on and on about how this guy obviously has never done any serious research on Christianity, I just want to focus on one thing that he said:  "(Jesus) is a holy scandal". This quote caught my eye because of a book I am currently reading for BibHitLit called "Simply Good News" by N. T. Wright. In the second chapter of this book, wright points out how especially back when Jesus was preaching, people though him to be scandalous (he bases this on 1 Corinthians 1;21-25). Before Jesus came, or I guess before he died and was resurrected, Jews truly believed that the promised Messiah would come as a great warrior and wipe out all of God's/their enemies, and re-establish the Israelite kingdom on earth. So, when a man named Jesus came around and started preaching and calling himself the Messiah, (and obviously NOT starting a bloody war), people just thought he was crazy. blasphemous. No one believed that Jesus was the Messiah that God sent to save the world. It wasn't until after the resurrection that people began to understand. So, in a way, yes, the Gospel was a scandal.

I think it's a really good book. A ton of you are probably working through it right now like I am. I would like to encourage you to look at it as more than a reading assignment. Chapter 6 has been my favorite so far.
