After Ever After
In G. K. Chesterton’s What I Learned in the Nursery he says “there is the terrible allegory of the ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ which tells how the human creature was blessed with all birthday gifts, yet cursed with death; and how death also may perhaps may be softened to a sleep.” Reading that made me think of this video. I started thinking about how you can really try to pick apart any movie if you tried. Sometimes it might not be rational, but you can try. I was thinking about how The Little Mermaid for example is ‘such a horrible movie’ because it’s about a girl that disobeys her father and changes herself for a boy. I love that movie. That was my favorite movie growing up, and I get annoyed when I look at the bigger picture. I realize that that is pretty accurate. I just do not like looking for a deeper meaning in movies (that I watch) because it makes it more than it is. I know that’s totally not the point of Chesterton’s writing. His point was that “We have all forgotten what we really are” and fairy tales help us remember. I agree with him, but this is just what that one comment made me think of.

I think the point of the Little Mermaid was supposed to be that Triton was close-minded, but yes Ariel's actions are hard to commend. This is a common problem in stories where character A is supposed to learn to lighten up or be more giving to character B, but in the process character B comes off as selfish or irresponsible with no consequences.
