Music Videos

I am usually not a fan of music videos. I mostly find them lacking creativity. For the duration of the song all you often see is the band members lip-syncing and generally playing guitars in random locations. That’s not to say there are aren’t any creative music videos out there, because there most definitely are. Sometimes music videos can be well-thought out and very engaging, like OK Go’s music video for This to Shall Pass. But I rarely watch music videos for the fact that I could listen to a song and do other tasks without watching a generic video to go along with the music.

However, there are some music videos that I do enjoy watching. If it has anything to do with animation, it grabs my attention, especially if they are animated with LEGO bricks. A couple of my favorites are Foster the People’s Houdini, and Ed Sheeran’s LEGO House, which are both animated by Dylan Woodley. In my senior year of high school, I created a music video with LEGO bricks for a Spanish worship group called Jireh Band that I personally know. They had just released their first album, and jokingly told me that I should make a music video for one of their songs, and I did! For the video, I recreated each band member as a LEGO minifigure, and created the three main sets for the film, a garage, a carnival, and a concert setting. The longest act to animate was the third one at the concert, because of all the extras in the audience and the constant camera movement. I made the music video over the course of six months and there are over 3,000 pictures in the film at 15 frames per second. Although it took a while to make, I find the outcome of the hard work very rewarding.
