MTV has certainly been around for some time now. After reading about the change that has been seen by MTV, I was reminded of a time MTV significantly influenced my lifestyle. The name Justin Bieber may ring a bell to some. If not, he is the adult that has been in the news quite often in the past few months because of his antics. Since then he has become more civilized and likeable for some. I’ll say now that I am in fact a fan of him. I can say that I am still a fan because I knew who he was before he even came to America. It was around the middle school days when I first saw him perform “One Time” live on Much Music in Canada. Crazy enough, I saw this performance and his music video on MTV. I had watched MTV every now and then during this time, and by now, they had already begun to intermix music videos with shows of their own. It was at this time that barley anyone knew who Justin was in America. It’s funny because I would go to school and talk about how good this kid was and that one day he would go big. No one knew who he was or believed me. Many years later my guess came true. Millions of followers and fans later, Justin Bieber is one of the most famous musical performers to date. Love him or hate him, the following he has is quite astounding in terms of numbers. This brings me back to MTV. I would have never heard of this up and coming singer if it was not for MTV. Yes, I would have eventually heard of him, but maybe not for a few years. I was not the only one to have seen him on MTV either. Others would have seen this and passed it along to others to watch and see. In that regard, MTV was an open portal to everything music. It allowed musicians and bands a fairly easy way to get publicity and to have their music videos aired to potentially millions of people. MTV was a workhorse of its time. Now we have so many services that eliminate the need for a dedicated channel for music videos. These thoughts more or less just go to show how powerful MTV was to musical works and other media during its prime. It’s interesting really. Nice to meet you Justin.
