Today in class i had a thought when it came to distinguishing the differences between a good reader and a bad reader of media. It happened when Professor Leeper mentioned how some people might read or watch a lot of movies, but never think of anything deeper except for the entertainment value.
It made me recall back to when my little half sister would come over to my Dad's house (which i lived in during my first two years of community college) and bring over all of these DVD's. DVDs that would have movies in the lines of Disney Princesses, Barbie and Monster High straight to DVD movies. Common fluff for a 6-8 year old girl. All this kid would do is have the movie play in the background while she would be doing something else, sometimes not even facing the screen or paying attention. But she owned so many different movies and would watch so many yet not really take it all in. Instead it would be "on to the next DVD"! It's interesting how we consume media such as movies now and days, for some people it is recreating the atmosphere of the movies. Make some popcorn, get the couch and chairs ready and turn off/ block any source of light other than the TV and/or Laptop. For some it's a thing to watch in your down time while on the go or traveling, or just by yourself in your room streaming hours or seasons at a time. And for kids entertainment, it's either sit and watch cartoons or sit while doing something else with the cartoons playing in the background for noise purposes.
Fast forward to a couple of years later and all she does now whenever she comes and visits is stare at her iPod touch with headphones in watching youtube videos on Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy's. Probably not the most wholesome entertainment to get into, but she is developing her own taste beyond everything must be pink mode. But the difference here is that she's actually more immersed into the story of Five Nights and the gameplay of Minecraft, it's all she ever talks about. I find it interesting on how the stories that are made for video games are just as immersive as watching a movie for some people. And how even though you might not have played the game yourself, you can still be as immersed into the story that the game has to offer; the beauty of youtube let's plays i guess? Or maybe the beauty of the human design, and how interactive media can be just as engaging as a movie or television show.
To be considered a good reader of media, one requirement is think about it and it's meaning. What was the director of this film trying to say? What was the real motive of the characters all along? Why did i react to that the way i did? I think that this is important. Art is suppose to effect you in more ways than just pure entertainment purposes. Art is suppose to make you think of the things around you and consider the issues in which it addresses. Art is also supposed to make the viewer/reader a philosopher, making you sit and think things through and interpret what the heck you just experienced. Probably a good reason as to why contemporary artists, such as the likes of Andy Warhol, seem to be doing weird out there acts but are really trying to convey ideas and make you, the viewer think.
An interesting piece of contemporary which is by Marina Abramović, shows Marina herself sitting in a chair across from a table another chair. There guest are welcome to come and sit down across from her, and look at her or react.

An interesting piece that affects in such a way that it leaves questions and gets you thinking. Thinking like a good reader in "what does this mean?" and "why am i feeling the way i am right now?" This is a great thing to have in any form of art, whether it'd be a piece of animation, a video game with a subtle plot or a strange contemporary piece dealing with looking at one another.
Though i think that the Bible, as a piece of literature and scripture, affects everyone in different ways as well. It was brought to existence to tell the story of creation, mankind and the end all in the eyes of our wonderful creator from above. People look to the bible for answers, yes but also to question the things in it. What did Jesus mean when he said this? What did God intend when showing up in front of Jobe? Things that leave us both questions and answers. A piece that makes us want to be good readers.
What kind of pieces of art/media were you the most affected by in your life?
