Over the last four years, I have come to the appreciation for balance. To me, balance is one of the most important things in life. The song Too Much of a Good Thing by Alan Jackson comes to mind. While the song says, “Too much of a good thing is a good thing,” I have come to realize amidst my own experiences that the statement in the song simply is not true. You see, when "good things" are taken and absorbed so much, we lose sight of reality.
In our discussions in class, that is how I feel the vast majority of Christian media is portrayed: only Christians can understand, relate, and appreciate the media they publish because it is so saturated with ideas and concepts that non-believers could not understand. In other words, we have lost touch with reality. We need to be able to better portray the role of Christianity in our media by creating real life, believable situations that can speak to people outside of the church.
Does this mean we have to be blunt with everything we publish? Does this mean we need to be explicit? No, not necessarily. However, it does mean that we need to be appropriate with what we publish. In other words, if inserting profanity in a certain scene would make it appear to be more “real life,” then I would deem it appropriate. Not everyone is going to use euphemisms in the real world. In fact, normal English is littered with profanity. While we don’t have to approve of the use of such words, we should not take them to heart when they are used directly to us. I could go on and on about balance in so many different areas in life, but that article would go on for ages and my fingers hurt from typing.
