Time to do a tragic post!
When a close loss happens, everyone who knew that person at one point takes a moment's pause to realize that they are not on this earth anymore. As a person who has experienced death of both close relative and old pets, i can say for the fact that it can be rather upsetting at first. People who are upset look to find comfort from this feeling. I think that this is indeed something that every human will have to expect to deal with at one point or another in life. That something is tragedy. In the films that we saw in class today i was both shocked, scared and unsettled by the images on the screen. Here is what I thought of what.
But first, to quote the written work of Shakespeare know as King Lear,
"The weight of this sad time we must obey. Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say"
(5-3-324-325)
This quote is appropriate when it comes to losing someone close or even for depression. It says that we shouldn't hide our feelings about the current events. We should not fake a smile, but instead be honest to one another about how you feel. This quote can also be considered for artists; saying that when something happens that is tragic and takes time to process, art helps as a sort of therapy. A therapy to the artist and to those around the artist.
That brings me to the first film that impacted me alot. It was "Small Hands" by Keaton Henson. This was a very lovingly crafted film, using what i can only assume can be puppets and maybe a little bit of stop motion. The animals had a story book look to them, which brought me into full on feels mode when i saw what happened halfway through the short. I enjoyed how the atmosphere transitioned into being happy and carefree to almost depressing and did not leave the audience with a whole lot of answers. Similar to actual death, you're kind of left there in grief thinking about the happy past and not left with any sort of answers other than to just move on and keep them in your memories. Felt like getting my heart ripped out, but that was the intention of the film; to give the viewer the perspective of Keaton after his father, puppeteer Jim Henson passed away so many years ago.
The short film Fridge was weird and claustrophobic... this felt like being stuck at the computer trying to figure out how to fix a big virus while having an anxiety attack... except replace that with the situation of a boy being locked into an outdoor fridge and having people whom don't have a lot to offer try to get him out. This film kind of reminds me as to why i don't want to end up teaching kids, and that's because some of them are assholes. I apologize for the swearing; but i felt it was necessary since every other word in this film is mumbled swear word of sorts. I'm not offended by this though, since it is like the real world that people swear when they are frustrated or scared. Not everything is squeaky clean with an child friendly sticker on it.
World of Glory was interesting too. As a german film, i get that this guy who made it might have some historical guilt. I like to imagine that the whole rest of the film after the beginning scene was the man in the suite's mental processing his whole life, family and guilt about the situation. Why else would he have a panic attack under a table and start hearing screaming in the middle of the night? The thing that affected me the most was after this film, and all of the other films for that matter, was going outside.
I entered outside after class and saw the vivid colors of the green grass, trees, the fountain, the blue sky and the red brick buildings and thought to myself how great it was to be alive. I'm still adjusting to things here and i have been having a negative outlook on life lately to be honest. But tragedy is necessary in life. It gets all of the bad gunk out of our systems and clears way for better things. Maybe that's why Inside Out was such a good film, because it's message was that it's okay to be sad. Don't let that stuff build up in you after a long time, but instead let your emotions out and let yourself heal. That was my random movie recommendation for the day. Go see it, new original pixar ideas are far and inbetween now and days. Man, i could go for some tea now. Have a good day everybody!
