A New Kind of Animation

The films we viewed in class by Caroline Leaf really opened up a new experience in animation for me. I do not necessarily know much about animation, but I have never seen sand used as a medium, and I very much enjoyed her films. However, her films seemed to have unusual endings, contrary to most animated films. For example, the film Owl who Married a Goose ends with the drowning of the owl, which I believed was very unexpected and sort of dark. Leaf's films, to me, were just that, sort of dark. I agreed with what was discussed in class, that the film of the two sisters seemed like a horror film and was hard to take in. Although this may be true that her films can come across dark and horrific, I very much enjoy her technique of the unexpected. The style and movement of the film was fantastic. I very much enjoyed the sand medium used throughout her films, they were unique and intriguing to the audience.
